The Golden Mountain By Irene Kai (paperback)

The Golden Mountain spans the lives and hardships of four generations of women in the author’s family in China, and traces her journey from Hong Kong at fifteen, to New York City, where she arrived during the tumultuous mid-1960’s. A journey of overcoming physical and psychological abuse as well as personal transformation,
The Golden Mountain recounts Irene’s experiences first as a non-English-speaking teenager, moving into her years as an accomplished artist, and in the poignant finale, coming to terms with the family she left behind. The Golden Mountain has been adopted as a textbook in numerous universities throughout the world.
Irene Kai speaks to ASIANCE Magazine on her life long journey and how she continues to educate America on her transformation from China, at age 15, to the New World.

Dreams of Joy by Lisa See (paperback)

In her most powerful novel yet, acclaimed author Lisa See returns to the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed 19-year-old daughter, Joy.
Reeling from newly uncovered family secrets, Joy runs away to Shanghai in early 1957 to find her birth father --- the artist Z.G. Li, with whom both May and Pearl were once in love. Dazzled by him, and blinded by idealism and defiance, Joy throws herself into the New Society of Red China, heedless of the dangers in the Communist regime. Devastated by Joy’s flight and terrified for her safety, Pearl is determined to save her daughter, no matter the personal cost.
From the crowded city to remote villages, Pearl confronts old demons and almost insurmountable challenges as she follows Joy, hoping for reconciliation. Yet even as Joy’s and Pearl’s separate journeys converge, one of the most tragic episodes in China’s history threatens their very lives.

The Binding Chair Or, A Visit From the Foot Emancipation Society by Kathryn Harrison (paperback)

In poised and elegant prose, Kathryn Harrison weaves a stunning story of women, travel, and flight; of love, revenge, and fear; of the
search for home and the need to escape it. Set in alluring Shanghai at the turn of the century, The Binding Chair intertwines the destinies of a Chinese woman determined to forget her past and a Western girl focused on the promises of the future.

Empress Orchid by Anchee Min (paperback)

The critically acclaimed author, Anchee Min, paints a fresh portrait of the last Chinese empress in this brilliantly fictionalized tale set during the waning days of the empire.

Seventeen-year-old Orchid belongs to an aristocratic family that has fallen on hard times. Unexpectedly, she is chosen as one of the emperor's lesser concubines. Within the Forbidden City are thousands of women hoping to bear the emperor a son and become his empress.
Orchid, determined and resourceful, schemes her way into the royal bed and seduces the emperor. But as the opium trade erodes the might of the Ch'ing dynasty, Orchid find herself at the center of a crumbling nation.

A colorful depiction of one of history's least understood women, The Empress Orchid is another enthralling masterpiece for Anchee Min.

The Secrets of Jin-Shei by Alma Alexander (paperback)

Enter an ancient world of courtly elegance and intrigue, where sages are also sorcerers, and the daughter of a lowly seamstress can become a companion to an empress. In this magical land there is a secret language -- a language that women have passed down from
mother to daughter for countless generations -- a language that signals a bond like no other... the bond of jin-shei.

Set in a mythical Chinese kingdom, The Secrets of Jin-shei is a timeless story of what sustains friendship -- and what tears it apart.
Accepting all the joys and responsibilities of jin-shei, eight girls pledge
lifelong loyalty to each other: the poet, Tai, whose promise to a dying girl changes the history of an empire; the warrior, Xaforn, an orphan who will protect her chosen family no matter what the cost; Khailin, the scholar, whose thirst for knowledge leads her into a world of dark secrets and alchemy; sage Nhia, the only person with the power to save Khailin; Tammary, the gypsy girl, whose secret lineage could ruin a royal house; Qiaan, daughter of a captain in the Imperial Guard, with family secrets of her own; the healer, Yuet, confidante to the empress; and the empress herself, Liudan, whose search for
family and ultimate quest for immortality holds the power to destroy them all.
