Description

Two tickets for Na Lei Hulu's October 25 performance at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco.

This dance company has performed nationally for enthusiastic audiences and receives critical acclaim for its work.  What makes the company unique is its trademark style, hula mua. Meaning "hula that evolves," the style blends traditional movements with non-Hawaiian music like opera, electronic, dance, alternative and pop. The company showcases a mix of hula mua and authentic, traditional pieces in its visually captivating stage productions.

From 1834 to 1948, over one hundred different Hawaiian-language newspapers were printed in the Hawaiian Islands. The newspapers became an intentional repository of knowledge, opinion and historical progress, representing a vast and critical native perspective not chronicled by anyone else. Our show this year, Ka Leo Kanaka, celebrates the largest native-language cache in the Western world in a thrilling production that features chants, songs and dances unearthed from those newspaper archives.
