The beach, with shallow waves and miles of sand stretching out to Scripps Pier, has fire pits for picnicking. Lifeguards are on duty at busy times. There are other nearby beaches, including Windansea, known for surfing, and a cove where hundreds of harbor seals and their pups can be viewed. Downtown La Jolla, a mile away, is full of the finest shopping and dining. Other local attractions include the La Jolla Playhouse, the aquarium at the Scripps Institute, and nearby San Diego.
