The Cabildo, built under Spanish rule in 1795-1799, served as a city, courthouse and prison before becoming part of the Louisiana State Museum with exhibits focusing on Louisiana's early history. In 1803, the Cabildo was the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer as well as the landmark Slaughterhouse and Plessy vs. Ferguson Supreme Court decisions.
