Description

This is a signed oil-on-canvas painting. 14" by 14" by artist Craig Mooney entitled "Snow drift."

Craig Mooney's roots in art go back to his youth. As a child growing up in Manhattan, Craig learned to exercise his natural abilities through sketching and painting. Craig's first teacher was his father, a physician, but also a gifted artist in his own right.

During and after college, the artist pursued an interest in filmmaking working closely with the Merchant Ivory Production company. During a stay in London where the artist was working on "Remains of the day" as an apprentice film editor, Craig would delve in the contemporary art scene that had taken over London int he early nineties.

On his return to New York, Craig devoted himself full time to his art.

In 2001, Craig moved with his studio supplies up to rural Vermont where he now resides.

Craig describes his current work as a form of impressionism with a contemporary bent. Deailts are generally left out. It is up to the viewer to decide what's going on. It's the absense of these details that make the work valid and compelling to almost anyone.

Mooney's technique can also be described as gestural. His work looks as if the paint was wet on the canvas-as if these creations took shape in one short period. Thick impasto layers of paint, and barecanvas inhabit the same space. It is just this paradox that makes the work interesting.
