Description
This is an original mixed media, abstract painting on wood by Ann Cox Strub. The piece measures 17 3/4" x 20" framed.
About the Artist:
Like her mother, Evelyn Daniel Cox (NC’29), Ann Cox Strub attended Newcomb College. She majored in theatre as a undergraduate and continued her theatrical studies at Tulane, receiving a master’s degree in 1966. While working on her master’s degree, she had the good fortune to study in France under Jacques LeCoq, who trained with Marcel Marceau’s troupe. After completing her studies and marrying, she joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Brazil, adventuring in other South American countries as well.
For many years following her return to the United States, Strub’s career focused on the performing arts and teaching. She was a theatre instructor at the University of New Orleans, the Louise S. McGehee School, and in the Orleans Parish public school system for over 30 years.
In the early 1990s, feeling a need for change, Strub enrolled in a studio art class at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. She says:
Studio art had been a great enjoyment for me at Newcomb, where I took all of my elective classes with Hal Carney. I never dreamed of a professional career in painting . . . I have achieved some success, but the greatest joy comes in experimentation, try to improve and finding new means of expression. It is wonderful and liberating to have a passion and to be allowed to pursue it.
The recently published Ann Strub Paints Her Muse (published by and available through the Jean Bragg Gallery of Southern Art in New Orleans) includes many references to a childhood filled with stories, songs and photos about Newcomb College imparted by her mother. This rich tapestry of memory greatly inspires and influences Strub’s art. Her work is on display at the Jean Bragg Gallery and in the permanent collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
