Description
Guided interpretive tour of the ruins of the Mt. Tamalpais Air Force Station on West Peak. The West Peak of Mt. Tam is the most hidden place of the mountain.Excavated from its original altitude of 2,604 in 1950 down to 2,573 in 1950, its still the highest point on our mountain. But very few people have been there and even fewer know its history because the military had fenced it off from public use for over 40 years.
Gary Yost is working on a documentary to spearhead a fundraising campaign to remove the vast amount of reinforced concrete, asphalt and fencing still at the Peak.He has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge of the history of the peak, going back to 1919 when the Alpine Club erected a monument to Marin Countys soldiers who fought in WWI.That monument was bulldozed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1950, but Yost knows where it was. He has interviewed servicemen who lived on the Peak for many years at a stretch, and knows many interesting stories.
Spend a Sunday afternoon in May with Gary Yost as he guides you through a 4-mile hike through the remains of the barracks, officers quarters, the old bowling alley, sewage treatment plant, helicopter pad, and the area around the FAA Radome.
Learn about the indigenous plants and trees that thrive on the massive amounts of serpentine rock there serpentine that was created in the earths mantle, deep under the ocean crust. And finally, stand on the bulldozed cut where the top of the Peak used to be, right next to the Radome.
This is the original summit of Mt. Tam and it now exists only in the spirit world. Feel what it is like to stand literally inside the invisible summit of Marin County's highest mountain. This is the place on Mt. Tam that has views of the Bay Area even more amazing than those from the Fire Lookout on East Peak. Gary will take your portrait (like the one pictured) and a picnic dinner will be provided.
Only at Greenwood could we offer such an incredible, local and privileged experience. Do not miss this!
