Description

Professionally printed and matted 10x15 inch photo, signed by the artist.

This photograph of the clock inside the Glace Bay Synagogue in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia was taken in Fall 2007. The once-thriving Jewish community is now very small since with the closing of the coal mines and steel plant families moved elsewhere to find work. Only a small community stayed in Glace Bay, mostly seniors.

Photographer Karen Nieuwland loves to wander with her camera and catch lights, colors, details and textures. The spiritual aspect of a place is also important to her.

Artist's statement:

"As an artist it is important for me to present transformed emotions. My priority is to express feelings about my personal life and about the world with all its beauty and troubling realities. I use classic 35 mm color or black and white film and I am exploring the possibilities offered by digital photography as well as experimenting with video and sound.

I came to Halifax from Europe in 1996 graduating from NSCAD University in 2003 with a Major in Photography. During the years at NSCAD I explored many possibilities offered by the photography darkrooms and printmaking facilities. I enjoy experimenting with layering, textures and weaving text and image together. I was also introduced to the possibilities of the computer and in the fall of 2004 I began to experiment with sound and video with the desire to incorporate these into my work and exhibitions.

I am represented by and have been an active member of ViewPoint Gallery in Halifax since January 2005."
