Description

This is a 15th anniversary reissue of Betsy Teutsch's now-classic 10-inch tambourine. The original design is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of American Jewish History, Phiadelphia, PA.

The design depicts a mythic minyan of women reading Torah at The Western Wall joined by the prophetess Miriam. Women of the Wall and their allies are still struggling for religious freedom: the right to worship together and chant Torah the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Artist Betsy Platkin Teutsch: "In this, my original tambourine, I transform the infamous chair thrown by hostile men at Women of the Wall into a seat of honor for a mythic Miriam, symbol of spiritual power for modern Jewish feminists." www.BetsyTeutsch.com

This tambourine is both a beautiful piece of art and a functional high- quality instrument manufactured by the California drum company Remo.

The artists says: "Jewish women have been celebrating with timbrels since Miram led the women of Israel in song and dance after miraculously crossing the Red Sea. Just take it down to celebrate at your Seders, Rosh Chodesh gathering, baby naming, B'not Mitvah or any special occasion when echoes of our biblical foremothers are welcomed."

Hang your tambourine directly on the wall--it is already framed.
