Description

Vivienne Douglas retired from corporate finance in 2006, began art classes and says she "discovered a whole new way of looking at the world through another side of my brain."  In 2009 and 2011, she was awarded Best of Show in the Heritage Art Center and Arvada Fine Art Guild shows.  "My goal is that viewers will infuse their own lives and experiences into what they see of my work," she says.  "I hope to remind them of relationships they have had, places they have been, their hopes, regrets, loves, lessons learned and times remembered.  To me, we all share a common bond linked by the experiences in life, and I try to bring out the connection in people and their journeys through life."

"To See Beyond"

The inspiration for this mask came from the Japanese tradition of Noh theatre, an ancient drama form dating back 600 years. Although the face is painted on and fixed in place, it is up to the performer to convey its feelings and bring the mask to life.  In doing this, the mask becomes part  of the sounds and rhythms, actions and pauses of the stage, much like we are the reflections of our lives and world. I hope my mask speaks to you of a world that exists, even though we may not always understand it.  (Note:  the artist incorporated her name in red calligraphy on the collar.)
