Description
Imo Mae Lax, a Colorado artist and disabled veteran, came to both of her professions naturally. Her father served in the Air Force as a graphic artist for her entire childhood. Her family followed him on all his assignments and lived at military installations across the US and Taiwan. After high school, Imo briefly attended business school before enlisting in the Air Force herself. During her 23 years of active duty service, she forecasted the weather on four continents. She was deployed to South Korea, Turkey, Senegal, Egypt, Great Britain and served in the War in Afghanistan. Her career was distinguished, and she was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal. When she retired from the military in 2007 at the age of 43, she received assistance from the Department of Veteran Affairs to receive a formal art education. After graduation and an apprenticeship with respected Omaha artist, Troy Muller, she began pursuing her second career. In 2012 she moved to Colorado to be closer to her three grown daughters and grandson. She quickly became active in the local art community and currently works out of her studio at her Castle Rock home.
Special Instructions
I combined light and dark colors over ridges of high texture and into deeper areas of texture, trying to capture what I feel are the many aspects of life. There are moments of light, which can only be seen because there are moments of darkness. We are elated and are lifted to peaks and fall into ravines of deep despair. The areas of gold represent to me the moments when we are blessed by the feelings and awareness of a presence greater than ourselves -- exalted by that beautiful light that shines on us.
