Description

"Don Sawyer is a full-time artist; a colorist who expresses himself more in color than in form. He does not mix paint, but uses pure color. Completely self-taught, Don uses a stiff brush and a heavy body acrylic paint, usually on a board of wood because of its texture and durability. He takes an everyday subject and creates his own version of that subject with color. The imperfections in Don’s work are one of the things that make it so interesting. All his frames are handmade and handpainted. “The future belongs to a colorist, the likes of which the world has never seen before” (V. Van Gogh). Hunter Fan Co. recently introduced ceiling fans featuring Don’s work on the fan blades. Milliken Carpet is doing the same thing on area rugs and floor mats.

Don Sawyer's interest in art began as he was growing up in Dothan, Alabama, but art soon gave way to cars, sports and other teenage things. In 1969 Don joined the Marines. He is a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, receiving two Purple Hearts, two Battlefield Promotions, the Bronz Star with the Combat V, The Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and The Vietnam Service Medal. Sawyer’s unit was one of the most highly recognized of that era. Even while in Vietnam, Don carved and did drawings, always having an eye for color. On returning from Vietnam, he opened his own Real Estate company. The company prospered, but art was always on his mind. He was struck with a temporary paralysis in 1994, which gave him more time to devote to painting. Most of his first paintings were done on cardboard and paper sacks. He returned to his business, but the demand for his paintings was soon so great that he gave up Real Estate and picked up his brush full time. "
