The annual American Music Awards features a star-studded lineup of music's top performers and honors artists in the categories of Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin and Contemporary Inspirational. The American Music Awards were created by showman Dick Clark in 1973 as an alternative to the Grammy Awards.

While the Grammy Awards are awarded based on votes by members of the entertainment industry, the AMAs are determined by a poll of music buyers, and as a result are more representative of public opinion. Also, the American Music Awards nominations are based on sales and airplay (regardless of release date), while the Grammys only nominate albums within their eligibility period. Past winners included Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepson, Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, Nicki Minaj, Usher and Linkin Park.
