Chappuis led the team to an undefeated season and a 49-0 thrashing of USC in the Rose Bowl to win the National Championship on his way to an All American year, leading the league in offense and being named runner up for the Heisman Trophy that year. Chappuis outstanding college career also included a stint in the armed forces where his plane was shot down over Normandy.
