The Kosher Marketplace, a grocery on the Upper West Side with a nice selection of prepared foods, takes a conventional approach to kosher cooking. Side dishes are particularly good and would make great picnic fare. Carrot tsimmes, simply grated carrots and raisins, is sweetened with honey, as is typical, yet the dish is refreshing rather than cloying. The same is true of mashed sweet potatoes, tinged with cinnamon and also quite sweet. Summer potato salad is a brisk blend of chopped new potatoes, with skins on, red pepper strips and greens, dressed with a vinaigrette.
