Charles Reeves and Holly Cluse and opened the Penny Cluse Café in May of 1998. Named after Holly’s childhood dog, Penny, the café serves up breakfast and lunch every day, all day. Charles grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence and had a pretty good stint in San Francisco. Opening a breakfast and lunch place was a natural extension of his restaurant career. He’s always focused on small, independently owned restaurants that cater to a local crowd with dependable food and friendly service. Holly also grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, and lived in San Francisco working as a teacher (and dreaming of Vermont).
Penny Cluse is located on the corner of Cherry and South Winooski in the heart of downtown Burlington. The clientele is about as diverse as it gets. Students, professionals, families, artists, politicians, tourists all vie for a table in the busy restaurant. Ask any regular and they’ll complain that there’s been a wait every Saturday and Sunday since the day Penny Cluse opened!

The Penny Cluse menu covers a lot of territory, not reflecting a particular region or style, but a compilation that satisfies a broad range of tastes. The breakfast side of the menu is a continuation of menus that Charles worked on in San Francisco. Customers have admitted to dreaming about everything from gingerbread pancakes to huevos rancheros. The tofu scram and omelettes are the biggest sellers with hundreds of ingredient combinations to choose from. While the breakfast side of the menu has largely stayed the same over the years, lunch has changed and shifted to accommodate the tastes of our customers and the interests of our cooks. The ever-talented Penny Cluse team also creates a multitude of baked goodies, soups, and daily specials.
The Penny Cluse Café has also become a high quality caterer, creating original menus and mixing creative cocktails for evening private parties. The restaurant easily converts into an intimate space to celebrate a birthday, holiday, rehearsal dinner or company party.
