Description
Go underground and explore!
Don’t miss this unique fun and educational opportunity for four people to tour one of the largest underground coal mines in Kentucky. Coal fuels over 90% of electric generation in Kentucky and over 40% of U.S. electric generation. This is a rare opportunity to see where it all begins! At the mine the group will be given an overview of coal mining and specific mine details and safety training.
Once suited with the proper safety equipment, the group will board a mine elevator that will drop the group several hundred feet below the surface of the earth to the coal seam elevation. At the bottom of the shaft you will be transported several miles inside the mine to the working section. Once on the working section the group will walk to each piece of mining equipment and see how it operates. Minimum seam height approximately 54 inches.
Alliance Resources Partners, L.P., the third-largest eastern U.S coal producer, with annual production over 30 million tons, will be the host for this tour. They operate ten underground mines in five states – Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and Maryland. Five of these operations are located in Western Kentucky and produce over 23 million tons of coal per year making Alliance Kentucky’s largest coal producer and western Kentucky’s largest employer. Total company employment exceeds 3,800 employees.
