Description

Don’t miss this unique fun and educational opportunity for four people to tour one of the largest surface coal mines in Kentucky.

Coal fuels over 90% of electric generation in Kentucky and over 40% of U.S. electric generation.  This is a rare opportunity to see where it all begins!

At the mine the group will be given an overview of coal mining, surface mine reclamation, and specific details and safety training about the mine.   Once suited with the proper safety equipment, the group will travel to the mine.  The group will also see the entire surface mining process from land clearing, blasting of overburden, operation of massive loaders, dozers and trucks-the size of houses.

The group will get to board an operating dragline, the largest type of earth-moving equipment in the world.  See how the reclamation process returns surface mined lands to their original or an improved more productive condition.  Post mine land uses include industrial, commercial and residential developments, farming, wildlife habitat, and reforestation.

Armstrong Coal, a privately owned coal producer, with annual production of nearly 10 million tons, will be the host for this tour.  They operate seven mines, three preparation plants, a rail load-out facility and a river dock in Western Kentucky.  Total company employment exceeds 1,000 employees.
