Journey through Australia!

Members of the Cousteau family have consistently provided awe-inspiring armchair adventures in their numerous film documentaries and richly illustrated volumes dealing with fascinating plant and animal life discovered in out-of-the-way places.

In this instance, instead of a planned three-month journey to points along the Great Barrier Reef, Cousteau and his team ventured forth on an extended three-year exploration of not only the formidable reef, but also Australia's remote Outback region, the River Murray (to study its fragile ecosystem), and the detached land mass of Tasmania.

Stunning photographs accompany the substantial text, with commentary on the present-day life and culture of Australia's aboriginal populations and on all manner of rare wildlife and flora encountered along the way. This is a satisfying sojourn and a highly recommended selection. Alice Joyce
