This 16 x 24 photograph by photographer France LeClerc is of two young Surma (Suri) women from the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia. People from the Surma tribe enjoy decorating themselves. They use colors from nature (chalk, charcoal, ochre and red clay) to paint their bodies in quite intricate ways.
Special Instructions
After one career in nutrition in Montreal and another as a marketing professor at MIT and The University of Chicago, France discovered that her passion was to take photographs that try to capture the essence of a place and of its people. She is especially interested in documenting vanishing cultures, from the festive rituals to the routines of daily life. Her focus has been mostly on Southeast Asia, a recent trip to the wilds of Ethiopia has her excited to expand her horizons to Africa.
