Description

In 1986, a man visiting the WCCO-TV studio told Don Shelby he wasn't tying his necktie straight and forever changed the anchorman's place in fashion history. The man showed Shelby an unconventional way to loop his tie, creating a perfectly proportional knot and dimple. Shelby, these days anchoring "Bring Me the News," continued to wear his ties that way. Local clothier Kingford Bavender found the method groundbreaking, saying it was "the first new knot for men in over 50 years." It caught the attention of the New York Times, which gave it the name the "Shelby Knot" in a 1989 article. Now, St. Paul-based King Brothers Clothiers has joined forces with Shelby to launch the "ShelbyKnot Collection." "Both Kenny and I grew up with it," says Danny King, who runs the company with his brother, Kenny. "Our grandpa and uncle tied their ties that way all the time." The ties are 100 percent silk and come in 20 designs. Danny King says the ties take less fabric than the standard amount for a tie used for a Windsor knot, so it is less bulky. Each tie comes with directions on how to create a "Shelby Knot," which requires the tie to be looped starting from the wrong side out. This package includes the gorgeous gold and grey silk tie, with the tag signed by Don Shelby, a CD of Don Shelby demonstrating how to tie the Shelby knot and talking about its history, and an article about King Brothers and Shelby.
