Description

We are a seasonal, sustainable, restaurant nestled in the town of Forestville, California. We draw our inspiration from Sonoma County, with all of its amazing bounties; orchards, farms, ranchers, foragers, and fisherman. Every vegetable, fruit, and animal is grown, raised or line caught locally. We value community and the moral, ethical practices of sustainability- which shine through in every dish. Our menu features whole animal butchery from local ranchers, house made sausages, bacon and pasta, as well as vegetarian cuisine, local beer and wine, and delicious flatbreads. We do a family style fried chicken dinner every Wednesday night. (Do not worry our vegan/vegi friends- we will still make you something delicious on those nights too) Friday and Saturday nights, you can enjoy the outside patio while listening to live, local music. Or stop by on your way to the Russian river and grab a picnic bag to go. With our style of rustic, California cuisine created with Mediterranean flare, in a West Sonoma County fashion, we are able to create seasonal menus that change daily as the lush bounties of our surroundings provide. Backyard's mission is to bring the experience of Sonoma County's backyard to your table.

Daniel Kedan began his professional cooking career as Sous Chef of Il Palio Restaurant in Sheton, Connecticut in 2004. This ignited a passion and excitement, in the restaurant field, for him. Wanting to learn everything he could, he decided to travel to Europe in 2006. Spending time tasting the amazing flavors of France, Italy, and Germany, Daniel felt invigorated and passionate about the culinary arts. Daniel enrolled at The Culinary Institute of America, in 2006, being part of the school's first A.O.S. program on the Saint Helena campus. While attending school, he began working under Chef Dave Cruz, at Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc restaurant in Yountville, as part of the opening team. There, he spent three years learning what true professionalism, along with love and respect for great ingredients, really was. Without any hesitation, he knew that California was becoming his new home. Daniel continued his career, in the Napa Valley while working briefly, at Solage in Calistoga. His interest in food sustainability, lead him to become the Chef de Cuisine at The General's Daughter in Sonoma. There he learned not only how to run a restaurant, but how to work and yearly plan, with farmers, plan and execute wine dinners and participate in wine auctions. Daniel was given the opportunity to, again, become part of an opening team in 2009. This time at Cantinetta Piero, in Yountville. Hired as Executive Sous chef, Daniel learned all aspects of managing a successful kitchen. There he was able to excel in his leadership skills once again, even stepping up as Chef de Cuisine for four months, while there was a staff change. Still having a strong passion for dealing with local, organic farmers, Daniel found his home at Peter Lowell's in Sebastopol in December of 2010. While working with the restaurant's 2 acre farm, along with a handful of other local farmers and ranchers, Daniel was able to create a kitchen that obtained 90% of its ingredients locally. Daniel also implemented whole animal butchery in the restaurant. A technique that won him high accolades, as well as allowing him to express his true passion with his craft. Daniel's passion and skills for the culinary arts are held in high regard not only Sonoma County, but Napa as well. He has received high marks from food critics, as well as the community. Daniel is an advocate for local sustainable communities, donating his time to local schools, charities, and the Ceres Project. Daniel's passion and reputation has made him one of the best chefs in Sonoma County.
