Artist statement:

Everyone shares a common understanding that the basketball hoop is an instrument of play. For most of the world, it is, similarly, a symbol defined within the boundaries of recreation and entertainment.

This photo captures a universal symbol - the basketball hoop - in its most powerful habitat - the streets of NYC. In this city, tucked just beyond sight, there are places where the hoop reigns supreme. In these places, the courts are sacred ground, marked definitively by hoops that are the only enduring relics of communities that crumbled long ago. Here, the hoop promises a chance to live and learn beyond the confines of poverty and violence. Here, the hoop turns hardship into resilience.

But you will also find that this same hoop is powerful enough to confer life to some, death to others. This hoop harbors few success stories and exponentially more dreams deferred. Here, this hoop, despite its inability to guarantee success, is all there is to believe in.
