After working four years in Southeast Asia, Jonathan Chu returned to his hometown of Los Angeles looking for the delicious tastes of Asia he enjoyed throughout his travels. Chu envisioned a unique restaurant that would provide an eclectic selection of his favorite Pan-Asian foods at an affordable price that would woo both fans of Asian cuisine and the uninitiated alike.

With the help of close friends, family and investors, Jonathan and his team set out to create a vision for Buddha's Belly and opened the Santa Monica location in 2002.

With more than forty years restaurant experience between them, Buddha's Belly has been a success since its opening. Inside the Feng Shui-designed restaurant, guests can enjoy a "culinary trip across Asia", a full take-out menu, and off and on-premise catering.
