Description
Plate 111 Blue-winged Yellow Swamp-Warbler is an original Audubon print from the first octavo edition of The Birds of America (published 1840-1844). After John James Audubon, the print is a hand-colored stone lithograph by James T. Bowen, an English printer who settled in Philadelphia and was well-known for his fine lithography. The print is a smaller version of the large folio print included in the original version of Audubon's Birds of America (published in London from 1827-1838). Upon completing the folio, Audubon returned to America with his family, and then turned his attention to producing a smaller version of the work – the octavo edition – with the hope of expanding the audience for his masterpiece. Other than the original folio edition, the first octavo edition is the only edition of The Birds of America that Audubon personally supervised.
In overall excellent condition, the print measures 10 inches x 6-1/2 inches. The paper has toning along the edges, and holes and small losses along the binding edge. The bird depicted is now known as the Blue-winged Warbler. The print comes in an archival sleeve and includes a Certificate of Authenticity plus a photocopy of Audubon's text describing the bird. This 170-year-old print should be framed using preservation framing techniques.
