That universal desire is why this tiny Hell’s Kitchen bakery has become a popular sweets-supplying service for office parties, celebrity soirées (Oprah, Sting, and Denzel) and for anyone who likes to have a high-resolution image made edible. This by-appointment-only shop specializes in cakes and cookies sheathed with a thin sheet of soy-based paper, which has been run through a laser printer and saturated with a digital image. Shop owner and veteran baker Edie Connolly offers only two flavors of pound cake, vanilla and chocolate, and cookies are of the rectangular shortbread variety. However, she’ll customize shapes and accompanying pictures whether they ask for a pound cake sculpture of a La Mer face cream jar or a plate of cookies stamped with this year’s family Christmas photo.
