Board Development
Many people believe that the money or the "gift" is the critical component to an organizations fundraising success. The money is critical, BUT leadership is more critical. Boards of Directors that are successful have many components, and leadership is number one. Leadership should be defined as those near to an organization, that have influence among their spheres of influence (work colleagues, social activities, family, friends, other volunteer work). Leadership does not need to be the person that everyone in the community points to when asked about leaders. The truth is that each organization has their own cadre of leadership and uncovering who those folks are is going to be the difference in a successful and effective board and one which is not.
It is the responsibility of the organization to provide information necessary to board leadership to be effective and impactful. Let's face it, just a person is a professional doesn't make them effective board members UNLESS the organization has provided context, a job description, a budget, a plan, and specific requests and expectations for our service. We see many times a disconnect between the board and the organization and we think that it is often a basic lack of communication and assumption that your board leadership knows what to do. Smith & Dale can assist you in creating these important expectations for each leader and they will differ based on the individual's background, profession, ability and willingness to participate, financial ability and of course time.
Smith & Dale can assist you create a board recruitment package, board solicitation program, board diversity strategies and finally train your board to be the best leaders they can be for your organization.
We will focus on:
- Best Practices Operations
- Best Practices Financial
- Best Practices Fundraising
- Specifics about your organization and how the board can communicate passionately about your mission.
