What is Laser Hair Removal (LHR)?

Laser hair removal uses light based technology to reduce and eliminate unwanted hair growth.  The alternatives to laser hair removal include shaving, waxing and electrolysis, which have their own unique upside and downside.  LHR represents a major advancement in the aesthetic market and has significant advantages when compared to other forms of hair removal.

How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Hair growth occurs via a series of stages as shown in the accompanying diagram.  Each hair follicle spends the majority of its life cycle in the active growth phase known as anagen.  However, for approximately 6 to 8 weeks each hair follicle enters a phase of regression known as the catagen phase and then a dormant phase known as telogen.  Approximately 10-15% of our hair is in the dormant phase at any given time.  Laser hair reduction works by delivering a high energy laser beam to the hair follicle and damaging the growth center which is located at the base of the follicle.  However, only the follicles in the active growth anagen phase are sensitive to the laser energy.  During the 6 to 8 weeks of catagen and telogen the hair follicles will not be damaged by the laser light.  Because of this laser hair removal requires a series of treatments usually spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart in order to capture all the hair follicles.
