Description
Three phenomenal Italian wines, Tiganello, Solaia, and Guado Al Tasso.
From the Winemaker of Tiganello: Intensely fruity and complex on the nose, with hints of wood full-bodied, rich and complex in the mouth with exceptional structure and a lengthy finish.
From the Winemaker of Solaia: Intensely fruity and complex with a good structure, well-balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. Displays unmistakable varietal flavor while retaining strong regional character. Wine Advocate:93, Wine Spectator:96
Robert Parker on Solaia:
The 2001 Solaia, far superior to the overrated 1997 (to which I also prefer the 1999 and 1994) is a classic example of central Tuscan Cabernet at its best, ruby-purple in color, warm and explosive in its expression of black currant fruit, tobacco, tar, and graphite, superbly concentrated and dense on the palate but balanced and shapely at the same time and with a noble austerity and grip on the finish which resembles the best of Bordeaux. The wine is a sure bet for another two decades of superb drinking. 96/100.
From the Winemaker of Guado Al Tasso: Extraodinary intense ruby red in color. Fruity, more of cherry than cassis, with hints of toast, coffee, and dark chocolate. Finely structured and complex, balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. Displays unmistakable varietal flavor while retaining strong regional character.
Robert Parker on Guado Al Tasso:
Tenuta Belvedere is the Antinori property in Bolgheri, once part of an enormous estate from which the vineyards of both Ornellaia and Sassicaia were carved out. After an excellent 1998, the wines of both 1999 and, particularly, 2000 were significantly less successful, but the 2001 Guado al Tasso should help forget this temporary unevenness. A dense ruby with purple highlights, the wine is loaded with aromas and flavors of perfectly ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, minerals, sage, and thyme. The wine is more fragrant and more finely-spun than Antinori’s other Bordeaux wine, Solaia, but there is no lack of concentration and density here, though both are tempered by a satiny texture and polished tannins which are all elegance and breed. Drink: 2006-2021. 95/100
