Born in London, 1962, Mat Barber Kennedy studied architecture at the University of Sheffield and at the Royal College of Art, London. It was during this time that he started to explore the subject and the process of design through paintings. 

Since graduating in 1988, the artist has travelled extensively collecting material for his studio work. Barber Kennedy's paintings celebrate the beauty of the everyday urban environment and reflect his passion for the stuff of architecture: bricks and mortar, plaster, concrete, and steel. Their imperfect textures, inevitable decay and often curious juxtapositions. These paintings capture moments in the lives of ordinary buildings unselfconsciously growing old with their inhabitants.

The artist became a full time painter in 1990 and upon election in 1994, became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water colours.
