Description

The Tucson Botanical Gardens, a tranquil oasis in the heart of Tucson, strives to be recognized and respected as the best small public garden in America. The Tucson Botanical Gardens promotes responsible and appropriate use of plants and water in a desert environment through education and demonstration and provides a place of beauty and tranquility for Tucson residents and visitors.

Open 7 days a week, 9:30-3:00 pm beginning October 1st through April 30th

Join us for the opening of the 9th season of Butterfly Magic at the new Cox Communications Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion.  Marvel and get up-close-and personal with nature’s flying flowers, and go home awed and inspired!

Dart Frogs have now been added to the Butterfly Magic exhibit and they have become all the rage! As of now, there are 5 different varieties and a total of 25 frogs.  Native to Central and South America, Dart (or Arrow) Frogs received their name from Natives using their toxic secretion to poison the tips of blow darts. Their toxicity varies between species and is largely determined by diet and consuming native plants and bugs in Central and South America. The Gardens frogs are bred and live in a contained environment, so they do not carry high levels of toxicity. As with all frogs, if handled a slight burning will occur on the skin and hands should be washed immediately to avoid spreading.

Entrance to Butterfly Magic is included in your Gardens admission.

On Friday November 1st, the Gardens will be adding Chickens to its array of attractions. “Mrs. Porter’s Chicken Coop” (named after founder, Bernice Porter) located near the composting area in the back of the Gardens will be home to a small flock of 4-5 chickens. Continuing the Gardens commitment to responsible practices and education, the chicken program will exemplify sustainability. The eggs from the chickens will be used in the Café, garden trimmings and other suitable scraps will be fed to the flock and the chicken waste, which is very high in nitrates, will be used to fertilize the Gardens. The majority of the materials used in the construction of the coop were donated; recycled or re-purposed materials and the chickens themselves are courtesy of Jeff Spangler from Dharmish Farms in Marana.
