Description
Mrs. Willett's 5th grade class is pleased to offer this replica of the Isle of Lewis Chess Set with a refinished vintage chess board. Mrs. Willett's students have taken up playing chess this year and have become fanatics. When they aren't studying, they've been known to have several chess games being played simultaneously in the classroom. These chess pieces were hand-poured with artist-grade gypsum plaster, sealed with a gloss crystal resin and seated on heavy-duty felt. Each piece was then hand-painted by the students. The unique faces and poses of the chessmen will be a sure conversation starter in your home.
The chessboard top measures 24" x 24" and stands 6" tall. It also features a small drawer in one side that contains not only the checkers, but pictures of Mrs. Willetts 5th grade students. The two kings are the largest pieces, each standing about 3" tall. Also included is a set of wooden checkers (not pictured).
Interesting fact: Considered to be the most celebrated chess find of all time, the original Lewis Chessmen were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. The pieces date back to the mid-12th century, which makes them some of the earliest examples of chessmen in Europe!
