The winning team of Lyon and Catalanotto (they’ve done nine picture books together) once again encapsulate moments in a preschooler’s life as a young girl’s parents prepare her for bed. The lyrical lullaby begins: “Everything nests—Shh shh / Everything rests—Shh shh / Time to turn in—To put away play / Turn out the light—Call it a day.” The soft-edged watercolor and gouache illustrations feature horizontal split screens of animals echoing the girl’s actions with warm tones for the human scenes above, and muted, blue-green hues for the creatures below. From bathing to hiding to reading a book, the loving family bond is warmheartedly expressed, especially the dad’s participation. Interestingly, Lyon first wrote the rhythmic words and then created a song for them. The author’s note and song, which you can hear on her Web site, are provided as back matter.
