Morro Castle (Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro) is a picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay built in 1589 and remains to this day a proud symbol of Cuba's history.

Interferons are also protectors and thus the picture of the Morro Castle is fitting. They are family of naturally-occurring proteins that are made and secreted by cells of the immune system. Commercially available interferons are human interferons manufactured using recombinant DNA technology. Both types boost the immune system response and reduce the growth of cancer cells by regulating the action of several genes that control the secretion of numerous cellular proteins that affect growth. 

The meetings on Biotechnology organized by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of Havana, Cuba, started in 1986, when the International Seminar on Interferon and on Biotechnology were held in this city, with an attendance of 1,500 delegates from 46 countries. This poster commemorates the inaugural congress. Since 1992 these international congresses have been known as Biotecnología Habana, and have always gathered more than 1,000 delegates from at least 40 countries, with an important representation of the Latin American scientific community, and top-level invited speakers from the USA, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
