Lana Dura’sFelted Bags began with two people who had raised rare Navajo-Churro sheep for many years. Our goal is to give sheep a job, a job that allows the sheep to live long, productive lives contributing to the sustainability and durability of their farm or ranch. Every farm animal needs to contribute to the bottom line to guarantee a future for small-farm agriculture. This is especially important with endangered breeds of livestock, the old-style breeds like Navajo-Churro sheep. In promoting these heritage fiber breeds, it is our intention to enhance partnerships with groups working to ensure continued genetic diversity in agriculture.

At Lana Dura we wash and card the fiber, make the felt and then sew each bag. Every bag has unique felt patterns, usually emphasizing the wonderful natural color diversity of these sheep. The bottom of the tote bags is a double layer of Cordura making a stylish, lightweight but strong sac. The bags are hand-washable (use dish soap and scrub any spills then dry flat… felt is made with hot water and soap so be brave!). Lana Dura bags are also strong insulators, keeping cold items cool… after all, they are made of 100% pure wool.

Navajo-Churro sheep were initially brought to the Western Hemisphere by the early Spanish explorers in the 1500s. They were valued for their vigor, adaptability and usefulness. Their fleece has an inner coat of fine wool fibers and a protective, long outer coat, qualities making the sheep quite weather resistant in diverse conditions, from dry Southwest climates to cold New England and Canada.
