ABOUT:  Moonshine is an edgy, urban roadhouse conveniently located in Chicago’s fashionable Wicker Park neighborhood. This unique establishment’s friendly, yet anti-establishment ambiance is anything but contrived. For those in the know, Moonshine’s story is one rooted in irreverence from its very first days of operation where, in classic City of Chicago’s bureaucratic style, it was denied a liquor license. In some ways, Moonshine’s story is about improvisation and perseverance, not unlike the city it calls home.

Adversity? Sure. But whining simply wasn’t in their DNA so they sucked-it-up and served great food and engaged the neighborhood, hosting events for many community organizations. To their great surprise, the locals responded by bringing in their own cases of beer, bottles of whiskey and carried on late into the night. Before long, Moonshine began inviting some of Chicago’s most renowned DJs to lay down butt-swinging grooves, moving bodies and souls well past suppertime. Neighborhood buzz began to catch like a brush fire and glowing critical reviews followed…and no, there wasn’t any graft involved! Honest.

Eventually, the City acquiesced and finally granted Moonshine its liquor license after operating as revered, rogue outlaws for over a year. More by circumstance than by design, Moonshine developed its own unique and credible identity, really from the very beginning. Moonshine’s authentic no-nonsense, do-it-yourself spirit translated well, where it enjoys an uncommon loyalty from its impressive repeat and regular clientele.

Ten plus years later, Moonshine is now considered a venerable anchor of the thriving boutique, shopping, residential and entertainment district known as Wicker Park. No selling out, though.
