Description

The winner of this item will receive two tickets a performance of their choice at the Court Theatre (see restrictions below). Not only will you be able to choose from their current season, but next season as well as this item does not expire until January 2015!

This season's choices include the Chicago Premiere of WATER BY THE SPOONFUL  - the Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

WATER BY THE SPOONFUL takes a painfully honest and surprisingly humorous look at the unconventional communities we create when we seek redemption from our personal failings. Iraq war veteran Elliot Ortiz has returned home only to find himself haunted by the ghosts of his past while his overachieving cousin Yaz seeks to define herself amidst the chaos of her family. Meanwhile, Eliot’s estranged mother Odessa struggles to stay clean as she moderates a chat room for recovering crack addicts like herself. Dancing artfully from story to story, playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes ties together the lives of each of these lost souls in a play of genuine warmth about forgiveness and redemption.

Or, you can see the Tony Award Winning Play M. BUTTERFLY.

M. BUTTERFLY. is an exquisitely delicate and aggressively original play about sex, espionage, and Imperialism. Skillfully intertwining the story of Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly with an extraordinary plot inspired by true events, M. BUTTERFLY.untangles the story of Rene Gallimard, a meek French civil servant who meets the woman of his dreams in Song Liling, a beautiful, Chinese opera diva. What Gallimard doesn’t realize—or refuses to see—is that his “modest Chinese girl” may be much more than she appears. M. BUTTERFLY. has become a post-modern classic whose exploration of the sexual politics of East and West continues to resonate today.

Or wait to see what they have in store for next season as it is bound to be exciting!

ABOUT: Established in 1955, Court Theatre is the professional theatre on campus at the University of Chicago. Court Theatre is guided by their mission to create innovative productions of classic plays that are thought provoking, character-driven, and thematically enduring. Through main stage productions, audience enrichment programs, and collaborations with the University of Chicago, Court re-examine, re-envision, and renew classic texts that pose enduring and provocative questions that define the human experience. Underlying this mission is their vision of becoming the Center for Classic Theatre, where the arts community looks for leadership in the creation, production and study of classic theatrical works. Court works to fulfill this mission first through the rigorous exploration of dramatic texts, including the African-American canon and musical theatre works; second by expanding the canon of classic theatre through initiatives such as the Barbara E. Franke Commissioning Program for New Classics; and third, by ongoing institutional strategic planning, which currently includes the possibility of an expanded, state-of-the-art facility. In all of its work, Court strives to sustain an artistic environment conducive to deeply creative work.

Named “the most consistently excellent theater company in America” by The Wall Street Journal, Court has a national reputation for excellence and innovation. Through five adventurous and compelling main stage productions per season, as well as a wealth of free symposia, post-performance discussions and education programs, it endeavors to make a lasting contribution to American theatre by thoroughly examining and imaginatively re-envisioning classic works to illuminate timeless themes and uncover immediately relevant messages.
