Bio: Felix Torres Chaviano was born in Havana, Cuba in 1970. He began woodcarving at the age of 12 when he studied with a private teacher, and has since continued his practice as a self-taught artist. His works include masks, human and fantastical figures, furniture, and life-size animal busts. He currently teaches adult and youth woodcarving classes at The Crucible art school in Oakland, California. In Havana, Felix worked with theater collective, Giganteria Ambulante, as well as Brigada Verde, and published his poetry in the magazine Mantis y La Isla Infinita. Felix’s art is inspired by Afro-Cuban religion and various autonomous aboriginal cultures. Much of the wood used in his sculptures is exotic, found from fallen trees in the Sierra Maestra region of Cuba. He has exhibited his work in New York, Oakland, and Havana, Cuba
