Cuenca is Ecuador's third-largest city, but it feels more like a charming old-world town, with cobblestone streets and a rich collection of colonial-era churches, plazas, and buildings. A good deal of the city's colonial architecture remains intact -- Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cuenca, Ecuador

Considered to be the most attractive of Ecuador's cities, Cuenca is the third largest city in the country, but retains the feel and relaxed pace of a smaller town.

Cuenca enjoys a year round spring-like climate. The temperate climate is ideal for raising the flowers and orchids exported internationally. Cuenca's year round pleasant climate makes it an all season destination.

The inhabitants of Cuenca are more conservative and in this tranquil city traditions and customs are connected to modern life in a very harmonic way. You won´t find many skyscrapers here!

 Things to do and See

  • Museo del Banco Central has historical photos of Cuenca, ancient musical instruments and changing exhibitions of local art.

  • Parque Calderón is the site of the new cathedral with the blue domes, looking somewhat out of place opposite the old cathedral, El Sagrario

  • Plazoleta del Carmen is the site of a colonial church and flower market

  • Plaza de San Sebastián contains a mural of children's art. The Museo de Arte Moderno and the church of San Sebastián are here

  • El Cajas National Park: Known for its more than 275 Andean lakes and many waterfalls, this national park is a popular destination for trout fishing, rugged hiking and camping

Day Trip

  • The most famous point of interest close to Cuenca are the Ruins of Ingapirca. These remains of the Inca Empire are the most important archeological site in Ecuador.
