Description
“Critical Point“ is a 21" x 15" Mokulito, collagraph, hand drawn lithograph by Allison Walker, a BFA printmaking student at Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art. Mokulito is a printmaking process similar to lithography, but without complicated steps or use of acids and harsh solvents. The technique is relatively new, originating in Japan some thirty years ago.
In "Critical Point" you may at first see an imploding neck or face, perhaps a wounded warrier, or even a woman's mass of hair. Whatever you take away, the print itself is quite detailed and unique. Using the collograph method, there are several layers of materials applied so that the print can take on many views, making this a one-of-a-kind print.
According to USA Today, Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art is ranked among the best fine arts schools. Its namesake, Gwen Frostic, was a famous artist and alumna who became Western Michigan University's most generous benefactor. Frostic was widely known since the 1950s for her block print art. She died in her longtime home in Benzonia, Michigan, where she operated Presscraft Papers, Gwen Frostic Prints of Benzonia, a Michigan landmark.
