Description
Have you ever dreamed of venturing into the heart of a pristine rainforest? Or maybe you're a birdwatcher hoping to spot rare and endangered Hawaiian birds. If so, this is the adventure for you. As you explore the forest, our primary mission is to bird watch but our naturalist guides share much more. Besides seeing rare and endangered Hawaiian birds, you will also learn about Hawaii's world-class evolutionary setting. Immersed in a world of giant ferns, orchestral birdsong and crisp mountain air, the forest will enchant you. Don't miss this opportunity to experience Hawaii as few ever see it.
Hakalau means "many perches". Named by Hawaiians long ago, it is still recognized as critical bird habitat today. Once part of a large cattle ranch, it was the first National Wildlife Refuge in the country established for forest birds and it is home to some of the rarest plants and animals on earth. The Pua `Akala tract you will access is not open to the public and is an excellent example of successful conservation practices. Target species include: `Akepa, `Akiapola'au, `Amakihi, `Apapane, Hawaii Creeper, I`iwi, `Elepaio, `Oma`o, `Io and Pueo.
