Description

This is a very note-worthy piece. It is an image of a D. Howard Hitchcock oil painting of a night view, volcanic flow on the West side of Mauna Loa entering the sea at Alika, South Kona, Hawaii. The original pencil sketch was made from the deck of the steamer "Mauna Loa" at night about half a mile from the shore and the painting was made the next day about the end of September 1919. The image is autographed by D. Howard Hitchcock himself sometime between 1919 and 1923.

D. Howard Hitchcock has long been regarded as one of the most important interpreters of the Hawaiian landscape with a career spanning more than sixty years. His finest period as a landscapist was from about 1905 to 1930. In addition to his paintings of volcanoes, Hitchcock also became widely known for his large dioramas and other mural-size painting of island scenes. In the early 20th century, Hitchcock was arguably Hawaii's outstanding resident professional artist.

The photo is stamped with "Gurrey Honolulu" signifying that it was produced by A.R. Gurrey, Jr., noted surf photographer for the book "Surf Riders of Hawaii", 1910 and husband to Caroline Haskins Gurrey also a noted photographer of Hawaii.

The image has significant foxing.
