Description
This canvas giclee is a colorful print of two nene in Hawaii Volcanos National Park. The nene, also known as the Hawaiian goose, is a species of goose endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The official bird of the state of Hawaii, the nene is exclusively found in the wild on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The nene is the world's rarest goose. It is believed that it once was common, with approximately 25,000 Hawaiian geese living in Hawaii when Captain James Cook arrived in 1778. However, hunting and introduced predators, such as mongooses, pigs, and cats, reduced the population to 30 birds by 1952. Nevertheless, this species breeds well in captivity, and has been successfully re-introduced; in 2004, it was estimated that there were 800 birds in the wild, as well as 1000 in wildfowl collections and zoos. Image measures 16" x 20" and is signed by the photographer.
The photographer, Charlene Meyers, is originally from Pennsylvania. Her first visit to Hawaii was in 1975 and it was love at first sight. In 2001 her husband Amos and she retired to the Big Island of Hawaii. Her love of photography grew along with the time she now had to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii, its people and culture. She currently volunteers for many community events and is the past President of the Rotary Club of Volcano and previous Assistant District Governor for East Hawaii. She has put in over 5500 hours as a Volunteer Ranger at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park since January 2002 and leads hikes into lava tubes, Kilauea Caldera, Kilauea Iki Crater and other trails.
