Description

Enjoy lunch with Artistic/Executive Director, Marya Warshaw and ASK HER ANYTHING!  Can't guarantee she will answer, but she will have stories to share, advice to give, and a nurturing supportive presence. Want to know more about BAX and its programs? Talk about artistic goals? Find out what makes her tick, her views on the performing arts world, parenting, and hey, the world in general!

Marya has been the Executive/Artistic Director of BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange since 1991. In 1998 BAX, under Ms. Warshaw’s direction, received a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award for its innovative work creating a house and a home for the arts in Brooklyn. She serves on the current Bessie Committee as well as numerous other state and city arts panels.

Ms. Warshaw received a fellowship to the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, Italy in November 2010 to write about her work with Resident Artists and the value of the BAX urban residency program.

She has been honored to work with so many talented, innovative artists, many of whom she now counts as friends including George Emilio Sanchez, Dean Moss, Martha Bowers, Christalyn Wright, Jose Garcia, Yasuko Yokoshi, Judith Sloan, Imani Henry, Nami Yamamoto, Faye Driscoll, and Shannon Hummel.

Warshaw danced as a child at the Center for Modern Dance Education, in New Jersey, studied at The Cunningham School and with June Finch and developed her first performing space Chichicastenango with dear friend Susan Bodine. Ms. Warshaw attended Bard College on a full Performing Arts Scholarship in theater & dance and has done graduate work in Arts Management at New York University, Gallatin Division. She lives with her wife Jane-Cole Raftery, dog and cat in Park Slope where she is a long time resident and raised her two sons.
