Says Sandy, "The sketch for each image is transferred to a block of thick linoleum and then I begin to carve, using a set of small Japanese woodcarving tools bought in 1970. All the carved areas show up as white in the print; what remains of the linoleum is black. The thick ink is rolled onto the carved block, a sheet of paper placed carefully over it, and the ink transferred to the paper by rubbing the back with a wooden spoon. As much as I love color, the mystery of this simple technique ifascinates me. Each linocut is printed by hand in a limited edition, and then signed and numbered."
