Description

This 12x12 original encaustic painting on cradled wood panel is by Seattle artist Mary A. Denend, who is Mariah Lee's (student in P3) aunt.

Artist Statement: After years of exploration, the encaustic medium drew me in and continues to allure with its versatility, fluidness, and beeswax scent. I enjoy the unique ability to incorporate my photographs in my paintings as they conjure up such vivid memories. My expressive landscapes, abstracts and collages are created from a melding of images from the places I have been. I draw inspiration from my travels, wonders of nature, vintage eras, and my nomadic childhood. Encaustics is a centuries old art form. The paints are a mixture of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. Encaustic means 'burn in'. After each molten layer is applied it is fused to the surface (I use wooden panel boards) or prior layer with a torch, heat gun, iron or other heated tool. My encaustic work incorporates all the elements - earth, fire, air and water. Mary A. Denend mad.encaustics@gmail.com
