From the Guardian "When I first heard Tune-Yards in 2009, it was one of those heart-stopping moments when you¿re pretty sure you're listening to incipient greatness. Seeing Merrill Garbus play live with her band a while afterwards was just as extraordinary: I hadn't really realised how she would recreate the record on stage, nor how thrilling it could be to watch someone actually build the songs before one's eyes (the curious thing is that, while I'm sure she wasn't the first to use sample and looping to create live music, it now feels like every other gig I go to features someone doing just this). It was gratifying, with such ostensibly leftfield, minority-interest music, to discover that lots of other people felt exactly the same way I did about Garbus's brilliance, and to see recognition spread (her second album ended up being the Guardian's No 10 album of 2011, and topped the Village Voice's Pazz and Jop poll). In May she releases her third album, Nicki Nack, and she's just made public the first song from it, Water Fountain. There's the Bo Diddley "shave-and-a-haircut" beat, a chorus that sounds like a nursery rhyme (in its whole stripped-back, bass-and-percussion, call-and-response construction, I¿m reminded of the Dixie Cups¿ Iko Iko), and again it sounds like world music that comes from everywhere in the world simultaneously. I think it's wonderful to have a listen."
