In the middle of a tropical storm, two parents comfort a girl frightened by thunder. Together with their neighbors, they soothe and distract her through song and dance until the storm subsides and shes learned to survive through the power of love.

The villagers tell herthe tale of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test her love against the forces of prejudice, hatred, and death.
