Description
Azurite & Malachite geode from the Robert Wiener Fine Mineral Collection.
Small acicular Azurite crystals grown on top of massive Malachite. Azurite (the blue) and Malachite (the green) are both copper based minerals. The two ofter form in combination as seen here. Azurite is a soft, deep blue copper mineral produced by weathering of copper ore deposits. Azurite owes its name, to its azure-blue color and from the Persian word "lazhward" meaning "blue". Malachite derives its name from the Greek "molochitis lithos" "mallow-green stone". The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the Mallow plant.
The specimen has some significant areas of damage.
