Description

Original Emma Schrock painting, "Sugar Bush," signed by the artist.  Frame is approximately 15 inches by 13 inches.

Emma Schrock (1924-1991) was born in Wakarusa, Ind. and began painting at age 40.  Schrock lived with a physical handicap.  While her Old Order Mennonite community forbade the depiction of the human form, Schrock was allowed to paint and sell her pictures in order to make a living.

As a naive artist, Schrock painted from memories gathered from her childhood and things she experienced among the Amish and Mennonite communities. Her work features scenes such as one-room schools, barn raisings and quilting tables.  Known as the "Grandma Moses" of Elkhart County, Schrock's paintings are still sought by collecters.
